Windows Live Sync

Do you have two computers?  Do you want to back up your working documents from one to the other without thinking about it?

You should check out Windows Live Sync.

This is a very clever and simple application that allows you to specify a folder on one computer to sync over the internet to another folder on another computer.  It works with both Windows and Mac.  It seems to take very little memory/resources.  And it simply works.

You install a small application on the two machines.  You set up a folder to synchronize.  And then any file you modify on one computer is copied (during idle time) to the other computer.

Setup:

We all have a My Documents (Windows) or Documents (Mac) folder.  This folder is used to put all kinds of stuff in from all kinds of applications (Adobe, Microsoft, eBooks etc) as well as the folder we create ourselves to hold our precious work documents.  You may not want to sync everything in My Documents.  You may want to sync only the Film, Fiction and Letters folders (for example).

You have two options with Windows Live Sync.

  1. Create individual sync folders for Film, Fiction, Letters
  2. Create containing folder — say Work or _Work (the latter will assure that the _Work folder is always at the top of the folder list) and move Film, Fiction, Letters under it.  And then sync ComputerA\_Work to ComputerB\_Work.

Review of Windows Live Sync vs Mesh…

Note:  Sync Live doesn't store your documents on the internet.  It simply uses the internet connection as the conduit for your file's travel from one computer to the other.  If you want to actually store (and be able to access) you documents on the internet, then check out Windows Live Mesh.
